Who would not agree that stress is already a part of our daily life? It is! But it doesn’t have to rule or take over your life. As a nurse, I’ve seen how stress affects the mind and body, and I know how crucial it is to manage it efficiently.

The WHO (2023) defined stress as a state of mental tension due to a difficult situation. It is a natural human response that signals us to address challenges and threats in our lives. Every one of us experiences stress in different forms and circumstances and it’s important to handle it appropriately because the way we respond to stress makes a lot of difference to our overall health.

Here are some practical and a nurse-approved tips to help you manage the stress that you feel and live a more healthy and balanced life!

1. Practice Deep Breathing Exercise

Performing a deep breathing exercise is a quick way to reduce stress. It calms your nervous system and lowers your heart rate. Try the 4-7-8 method, to do this follow these steps:

  • Inhale deeply through your nose for at least 4 seconds
  • Then hold your breath for 7 seconds
  • After that exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds

This simple stress reliever can be done anytime whether you’re at home or at work.

2. Maintain a Balance Diet

The stress that we feel often leads to food cravings, like indulging in unhealthy foods or those “comfort food”, but you need to take note that choosing nutrient-rich meals or snacks will help your body to cope better and faster. Focus more on:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish and chia seeds) help in boosting your brain health.
  • Foods high in magnesium (such as spinach and almonds) help to relax muscles.
  • Hydration or drinking plenty of water help to keep your body to function optimally.

3. Have Enough Sleep

Prioritizing sleep is important for your mind and body to relieve yourself from stress. You should aim for at least 8 hours of good sleep each night. Be able to create a bedtime routine, avoid screens an hour before going to bed and keeping your bedroom calm and comfortable space to sleep.

4. Get Moving

Doing an exercise isn’t just beneficial for your body but it’s a natural way to relieve your stress. A physical activity releases endorphins which helps to improve your mood and reduce stress. A simple 30-minute walk outside your house can do wonders for your health and wellness.

5. Setting Boundaries

One cause of stress is to taking on or saying yes too much! Learn to say NO when necessary. Be able to establish boundaries to protect your important time and energy. This is important so that you can focus more on the things that makes you more productive.

6. Create a Routine that will Help You Relax

Incorporate activities that will help you unwind. For some individuals, this might be meditation or yoga, for others, it could be listening to calming music or journaling. Find what will gonna help you and what will work for you, then make it a part of your daily routine.

7. Connecting with Others

Having a social support is vital in managing stress. Share your thoughts and feelings with your trusted friends, family or colleagues. Sometimes, a simple talking over things out can make a difference.

8. Take Breaks

If you feel overwhelmed in a situation, stepping away for a moment can help. Even a few minutes break can help clear your mind and give you a fresh start. Use this time to breathe, stretch or simply sit quietly in peace.

9. Practice Gratitude

Focus on the positive things to shift your mindset. Each day, take a moment to reflect on the things that you’re grateful for. It could be something as simple as eating a good meal or giving a kind gesture to someone else.

10. Seek Professional Help When Needed

If you feel that stress is already unmanageable, don’t hesitate to seek help from a counselor or healthcare provider. They can provide strategies and tools tailored to what you need.
